New iPods Now Available!
September 5th, 2007 | AppleToday’s special Apple Event provided what many have been waiting for, updates to the most popular MP3 player, the iPod. Apple didn’t just provide a new version of the iPod but they’ve created a whole family of iPods that will accommodate practically any type of consumer. From the Shuffle to the Touch models they’ve added features and capabilities. Lets meet the family:
iPod Nano
The best selling iPod to date has returned and has completely been upgraded. Not only is it now smaller than the original nano but it now features a sleek full metal design that’s available in multiple colors (red, silver, light blue, teal and green). The user interface uses the Cover Flow technology making the user navigation experience extremely attractive and visual. The 2″ screen which is brighter and as a 320×240 resolution is the highest pixel density Apple has ever shipped! There will be two models; the 4GB and 8GB selling for $149 and $199 respectively. The battery will allow for 24 hours of audio playback and 5 hours of video playback…Yes, the Nano now offers video capabilities as well.
I suspect the Nano will again prove to be the highest selling iPod of the family as its reasonably priced for the average consumer as well as satisfies the need for a small multimedia device.
iPod Classic
Were you expecting a revamped full-size iPod? I sure wasn’t. Apple has managed to slim down the full metal body while also increasing its storage space with versions at 80GB and 160GB. This model is somewhat reasonably priced considering the size options available. The 80GB may experience higher sales at $249 which will prove to be more than enough space for the typical music/movie user. Apple has also gone and satisfied the hardcore music/video junkies that want the ultimate amount of storage by providing the 160GB for $349. I thought I had a lot of music at 67GB of space but 160GB is a serious amount of space and could never imagine using all that up. The Classic will suit well for an avid traveler whether its business or pleasure.
iPod Touch
Well this new iPod looks exactly like the notorious iPhone but actually slimmer at 8mm. It features the same multi-touch pinch and spread controls as the iPhone utilizing the same Cover Flow as the iPhone. The screen is a stunning 3.5″ diagonally with the one main home button. The iPod Touch will also offer WiFi using the Safari browser and makes YouTube videos available only when in a WiFi area. This is essentially just an iPhone minus the phone. The Touch will be available in two sizes, 8GB and 16GB selling at $299 and $399 respectively. I must say that this came as a huge disappointment in that I was really expecting some larger storage space. The touch screen and navigation are so intriguing yet if actively grow your music collection you may find yourself filling this up relatively quickly. If you like this device so much I just don’t see why you wouldn’t take the next big step and get the iPhone itself.
iPod Shuffle
Nothing much new here except the colors available (silver, light blue, teal and green and the Product RED version). The shuffle will still be the cheapest iPod proving most effective for the avid fitness individual. 1GB of music should be enough music for any workout I could think of.
Apple is clearly trying to please any type of music/video user with the various options within the iPod family which. I currently have a 30GB video iPod and only really use it when I work out or go for a long drive so I don’t see myself jumping to buy any of these just yet but who knows what will happen once I go to the store to see them in person. What part of the iPod family fits your needs and will the new Nano prove to be the best selling iPod? If you’re in the market for a cheap music/video solution I can only imagine the number of iPods that will be available on ebay as people sell their current iPod to make the upgrade.
