How Could You Ignore The iPhone?

I just read an article from MacWorld explaining why IT departments should not ignore the iPhone. This article caught my eye as my IT department has tried connecting my iPhone to our company exchange server and failed. The issue has yet to be resolved. They handed the phone back after one try and said they didn’t know how to solve the matter. This shocked me as I once worked in the IT department in college and I feel like most IT people have the mentality of “if i don’t get it I’m going to play until I figure it out”. Thats how I was and the same goes for practically every IT person I’ve ever met.

My rally cry to all IT departments; it would be insane for you to ignore the iPhone. Just because the email and VPN support are currently way below par does not mean that Apple won’t solve all these issues. As an IT person it’s your role to be in the know about these things so that when someone in your company has an issue with the device you’re able to solve it.

I’ve said it numerous times and I’ll say it again, the iPhone has set the tone for the mobile phone industry. More and more phones will start having email capabilities allowing for more and more individuals to receive work email to their phone. You know who they’re going to ask to setup their phones? Yup! You guessed it, the IT department.

Came here via Problogger. Nice blog. Don’t worry. Once more people start using the iPhone, your IT department will be forced to find some way to connect it.

Thank you! Yeah I know they’ll figure it out. I think I’ll figure it out first though! Their attitude is what got me frustrated…I mean at least pretend like you care you know?

Darren just wrote a post about this blog on problogger. cool thing about Darren.

IT people, how evil? well, I’m one of them, and yes my mentality is when something does not work I make it work no matter the time and effort there is to fix it. but you have to realize something Greg, the Iphone is fairly new on the market and sometimes these gadgets lack the support to be hooked up to a corporate e-mail server, is not because they suck, it is because microsoft sucks when it comes to supporting other products rather than windows based mobiles. exchange server 2003 does not support direct connectivity from a smartphone if that phone is not running windows mobile, blackberries are supported by a blackberry server not exchange. I do not know how I would go hooking up an Iphone to a exchange server, but probably it could be a real hassle. we are not evil, sometimes we just avoid the work. good blog by the way. i’ll subscribe, the evil on your RSS reader.. jejej

it is really surprising to know it happened with the iPohne.i was collecting money to buy it.What should i do know? it marked a Q in my mind.

    Shaz,

I’m not exactly sure what carrier you have and depending on your use you may truly enjoy the iPhone. My location and style of usage does not sync up right now for the iPhone. I still believe its an awesome phone and at this point you may want for the next update if you truly decide you want the iPhone.

I have experience with the Q and I personally am not a fan. I love the blackberry OS and find that to be most reliable if you’re a big emailer on the go as I am.
