Photography Tip #1: Know Your Camera
September 21st, 2007 | PhotographyI am going to start a new series of posts focused around photography and getting great pictures. I am in no way an expert but have done a lot of reading and experimenting myself as I have tried to grow as a photographer. I plan on sharing tips, tricks and just general advice on things I’ve learned along the way.
So here it is the first tip in this soon to be series. Know Your Camera!
Tell me if this sounds like something you’ve done? You just got that great new camera (most likely digital if you bought it recently) and you ripped open the box in excitement and barely looked at the manual.
To be honest, that is exactly what I did. I found myself out in the field trying to take pictures but didn’t know all the features of my brand new purchase. I had to go back and still do go back often to reference my manual to refresh my memory.
Alright, so if you haven’t done so already sit down and take that manual out and read through it. Learn the functions of your camera and what each button press does and what the information on your viewfinder represents. Learn how to control exposure and the different modes such as aperture priority, shutter priority or macro modes.
Understanding the ins and outs of your camera will be very beneficial when you’re out in the field and want to pull off a specific shot just right. Also search online for tutorials on your camera model. For example, Nikon users like myself can check out amazing video demonstrations online that walk through features of various models like my Nikon D50.
So before you get out there and get trigger happy take some quality time and get to know your camera!
