Get dotMobi Domains

October 31st, 2007 | Mobile, Online

Mobile domain name registrar dotMobi is having their second auction today! Their first auction was a success as they offered up registrations to over 5,500 commonly used words for their .mobi domains. The second round will most likely prove to be another huge success as the mobile web continues to become adopted in the marketplace. With the first auction generating more than $850,000, what type of growth can we expect this time around?

SMS Text News states:

Amongst the 100 “premium names” in the auction are such gems as car.mobi, gps.mobi, gay.mobi, kiss.mobi, love.mobi and map.mobi. If the first auction is anything to go by, the stakes will be high - back in September hosting.mobi sold for $101,000 plus bank.mobi and download.mobi both sold for more than $50,000 apiece.

It’s amazing to me that these mobile domains are going for so much right now. Granted they are extremely popular and generic making them all the more valuable but how many people do you know that use the mobile web often? I mean, I know there are a lot out there but I just feel personally as a consumer I don’t often see or hear of individuals utilizing this type of service. Don’t get me wrong, I use the mobile web and quite often for that matter and completely believe it is going to be extremely successful it’s just amazing that these domains are selling for such high values. But I guess you have to get in the game early as they say. Do you plan on securing a .mobi address for your business or even your blog?

Those prices are quite high, and it remains to be seen if the investment will be worth it. The mobile web will definitely be used a lot more in the future, but paying so much for those domain names is really speculative.

However, I did check out google.mobi, which, not surprisingly, is already taken. If it wasn’t, I might have been willing to pay an exorbitant price for that one!
