Wireless Wednesday: I Heart Blackberry Messenger

November 7th, 2007 | How-To, Mobile, Workflow

As some of you may know, early in October I switched to a Blackberry 8830 due to an expected career change. And I even gave up my iPhone (not that I had much of a choice). As I’ve been using my 8830 I’ve found Blackberry Messenger to be extremely useful. Many may not find the basic Instant Messaging client all that special but I seem to think otherwise!

First, anyone with a Blackberry can utilize this service and you can find a great How To for Beginners here but my favorite feature is by far, voice notes. Let me give you a scenario to explain this a little better.

You want to contact a friend to let them know that you’re on your way to pick them up. Now, this may be a little too much to text (SMS) but just not enough to justify a phone call. So, using Blackberry Messenger you can record a voice note and send it as if it were like an instant message to your recipient. They’ll receive your voice file and they can even listen over their speaker phone.

As an avid texter (some may say addict), I often find that people try to text too much. Text messages really are for the quick messages that should not really require much conversation. I have friends that have full conversations with people via SMS and I just think that’s ridiculous.

Here is my advice, If you have more than 5 texts go back and forth you probably should be having a quick phone call. For those quick updates, try using voice notes via Blackberry Messenger.

It’s extremely simple. While within your Blackberry Messenger service, click your Blackberry button and select “Send Voice Note”. You’ll see that it has started recording…what are you waiting for? Start recording your message it’s that simple. When you’re done just hit stop and it sends the message. Doneskee!

Well, I hope you enjoy using this service as much as I do now just get all your friends to get crack-berry’s!
