Wireless Wednesday: Android Is In Your Hands

November 14th, 2007 | Mobile

As some of the hype and excitement of the iPhone dies down we continue to learn more about Google and its plans to compete. Earlier this summer it had appeared we were going to witness a Google Phone. Many questioned this move and many seemed excited. As time passes and more information is revealed we now know that Google will in fact not be diving into the handset market (a great idea), however, they have created their own Mobile OS. Google would like you to meet Android!

Earlier last week engadget had a good article about Android and now Fast Company has followed it up with a great video in which we get to see the Android OS on its test run. I must say it looks pretty impressive! Google has done an amazing job incorporating their products with each other. For example, you do a google search for restaurant and you can click to receive the map. The way that Google allows for an individual to move from service to service completing a variety of tasks and, completing these all with their products often leaves me speechless.

As you watch the video you’ll notice that to some extent Google’s Android is in our hands. They are offering $10,000 to the person that creates the best application for Android. I seriously take my hat off to Google. We’ve witnessed many user generated sites such as Digg become extremely successful. Now, Google brings you a user generated operating system. Many will compete for that $10K and Google will be presented with a number of great apps due to this challenge.

I mean, did you see Quake on that phone? The mix between 2D and 3D was awesome to say the least. The OS seems like it will be pretty flexible which should prove to be interesting as we see what types of apps are created by the public.

Will you compete for the $10K? What type of app would you create if you had the chance to develop one?
