Wireless Wednesday: Someone You Know Has Done It

November 21st, 2007 | Mobile

Have you participated in a mobile marketing program? Well, someone you know has and most of the people you know are interested in mobile marketing. There are a number of ways mobile marketing has probably found a way into your life as well as the lives of many of your friends and family. A recent article mentions a survey performed by the MMA (Mobile Marketing Association) stating that “one in 20 Americans has participated in a mobile marketing”.

Furthermore, one in four U.S. citizens are interested in this new form of marketing. So how have you or someone you know possibly participated? Well, the most common form of mobile marketing is currently that of sweepstakes and forms of voting campaigns. For example, if you ever have watched American Idol, viewers are able to text in to vote for the favorite performer. Deal or No Deal has the secret box sweepstakes at the end of every show allowing viewers to text in to determine which box has the cash reward.

These are both forms of mobile marketing. You’re connecting with both the brand of the show, in this case American Idol and that of the carrier representing the show. AT&T is the sponsor for American Idol thus anyone with their service can participate.

So you haven’t texted to win a prize or vote for something? Well, maybe you’ve signed up for text alerts. Text alerts are another popular form of mobile marketing. Text alerts are being used by many to stay in touch with consumers. Banks use these services to keep their customers up to date with their bank account. Personally, I receive text alerts to keep track of scores of my favorite sports teams. Sports like baseball and basketball are ideal for this type of service since there are so many games in a season leaving many unable to watch and follow.

More and more you’re going to see mobile call to actions in all other forms of media whether it be TV, print or online. What is the latest form of mobile marketing you’ve seen in the media?
