Apple Sprawl In 2008
December 10th, 2007 | AppleIf you’ve ever taken environmental economics, either because that’s your thing or because you heard the professor was easy and you wanted an easy class your senior of college, you’d know its a growing issue in the U.S. If you’re unfamiliar with urban sprawl, it’s the spreading of a city and its suburbs over rural land at the fringe of urban areas. Why am I telling you this? Well, Apple is scheduled to open 40 new stores in 2008. How is this related to sprawl you might ask?

Well, sprawl usually carries a negative connotation due to the health and environmental related issues. Increased pollution and more traffic are common results of sprawl. Thankfully, Apple has yet to experience the negative effects of their sprawl and hopefully they never do!
With 40 new stores coming in the new year, some of those being international Apple is still riding the wave they’ve created the last few years. They already have 204 stores worldwide, most of which are here in the US. Recently at the opening of the new 14th street store in New York City, the Senior Vice President of Retail(Ron Johnson) said there would be a large focus internationally in 2008. This article details some of the expected stores across the world.
So how do you feel about Apples rapid growth? I mean they are beginning to penetrate almost every market in some way shape or form. If there isn’t an Apple Store located near you now, it most likely wont be long until you have your local store. I personally am excited to see how great they are doing. More and more stores will expose consumers to the amazing products that Apple has to offer meaning more PC users will convert and more die hard Apple fans can continue to upgrade easily.
One thought…as we do experience this remarkable growth, do you think it at any point can result in a negative outcome similar to that of urban sprawl? Can Apple’s growth both domestically and internationally end up affecting Apples adoption of users? I haven’t really decided how I feel as of yet…what do you think?
