Wireless Wednesday: I’m Addicted To My Mobile Phone
December 12th, 2007 | MobileSo after a recent conversation with my girlfriend, it’s been confirmed that I’m addicted to my mobile phone. Since about October I’ve been using my BlackBerry 8830 World Edition. I have to admit, I am pretty addicted, it’s no lie. Between work email, personal email and my mobile phone being my primary phone its a key necessity in my daily routine. Just thinking of how much I actually rely on my phone got me thinking of how it impedes on certain aspects of our lives that it most likely shouldn’t.
More and more I see people on their phone driving, shopping eating and even working out at the gym. The mobile phone has somehow found its way into many of the daily activities we partake in. It’s really amazing to see how dependent we’ve become on our phones. Obviously, the more functions my phone is capable of the more likely I’ll rely on it to accomplish certain tasks. But when do we take it too far?

Personally, I’ve found that I text message a fair amount. Whether its among friends or family I find it a convenient way to communicate quickly with them. Even with my mobile phone addiction, I’m still not a big fan of speaking on the phone for long periods of time, which is probably why I find texting convenient. So what’s the problem? Well, I’ve found that texting has become such an key method of communication not only for myself but many others. So much that what may have intended to be a quick update to your friend turns into a long dragged out conversation via text. I am guilty of this just as much as all of the people I’m referring to.
Why have such serious conversations via text? I mean, I’ve had some pretty intense conversations going back and forth text messaging people. I sit there and say why are we not just talking on the phone? For some reason a call is never made. It’s actually quite sad if you ask me. If a conversation carries a certain level of importance to either of the individuals involved it seems so much more appropriate to have a conversation at least over the phone if not in person. Right? Is it just me that feels like this “impersonal” form of communication has seriously affected the way we converse as humans?
Well, moving forward I’m making a serous attempt to use text messaging only when appropriate. Maybe, 3 messages back and forth should be the limit? No more serous conversations via text, NONE! What do you think? At what point should a text conversation just turn into a phone call?

Dude, Kempe was just talking about that. I and I now understand why he never picks up the phone, he is always texting!

Ben and Greg, all I have to say is that you have finally realized what I have been saying all these years; I refuse to become a slave to my cell phone. haha, in all seriousness I am much better now at picking up the phone!

Just for all my readers….Kempe was a college roommate of mine. I haven’t spoken to him in a LONG time. Why? Well, he doesn’t answer his phone or return phone calls. Apparently I have to text him…go figure!
