Review: Back To My Mac
December 17th, 2007 | Apple, How-ToSo since I’ve been using Leopard I’ve been waiting to try the new Back To My Mac feature. Well, if you read my post last month you would know that I am with a new company, Ifficient. What does that mean? With my new position came a new MacBook. I’ve configured both of my machines now to utilize this feature and I have to say it’s pretty impressive. Are you not familiar with Back To Mac?
Back to My Mac allows you to access and control your mac computer from any other mac. The only catch is that you need a .mac account. If you have this you’re good to go! This new feature lets you share and control the screen of your mac computer from another mac very similar to how you could control it if you had Apple Remote Desktop. I’m going to take you through the process on how to use Back To My Mac by connecting my MacPro w/ 30″ Dell Monitor to my new MacBook notebook computer.
First, you need to locate the Mac in which you would like to connect to. You accomplish this by using your finder. You’ll notice that in the sidebar you’ll see a “Shared” section. My work computer is listed as “greg_ifficient”. When you highlight that option you have the options to “connect as” and “share screen”.

Once connected you’ll see that you can access the main files on the computer.

For example, if you were to click on my user profile “greg” you would see the main files on my MacBook. If I highlight desktop you’ll notice some files on my work computer (MacBook).

Now, If you want to connect and share the screen simply select the “share screen option”. You’ll notice in the below full screen image of my 30″ monitor you’ll see the window displaying my MacBook’s desktop.

To get a closer look of this window look below.

I can control all actions taking place on the MacBook. If I choose to open the hard drive (HD) I can do so as displayed below.

You’ll notice this can provide a lot of benefits. Now I can leave my home computer on while I go to work and access any files I may have on there should I have to reference something. Or if I need a document for my blog and I happen to have a moment to write a post or capture some thoughts while on lunch break of course! It really is nice having this option and I may not use it often but I have used it a coupe times thus far.
What do you think of Back To My Mac? .Mac users, have you tried this? If so, what are your thoughts? For those that don’t have .mac…does this spark any interest in hopping on the .mac train?
