Breathing At 13,000 Feet

January 24th, 2008 | Personal, Workflow

I recently just came back from Colorado visiting a friend of mine. In this time I had the opportunity to finally ski some mountains NOT on the eastern coast. Let me tell you, the skiing in Colorado is absolutely unreal! The fresh powder or POWDA or POW POW as its often referred to provides the greatest skiing conditions. In my short trip I skied three mountains; Vail, Breckenridge and Beaver Creek. All were amazing in their own way. Whether it was the back bowls of Vail, the technical moguls of Beaver Creek or the 13,000 foot elevation with 40MPH winds of Breckenridge I had the best skiing experience. Yes, I said 40MPH winds…

Breckenridge was wild in that I’ve never been at that elevation before. You can see in the picture above that I was just under 13,000 feet. You were able to hike up a little more to top 13K feet and drop into a nice bowl. My friend Nick and I had to take the pictures quickly as it was approximately - 33 degrees Fahrenheit with the 40MPH winds, so it was a little cold taking the ol’ hand out of the glove to snap the picture let alone stand there while the wind was trying to throw you to the next mountain.

Looking back on this experience it was extremely intense trying to breathe normally at this elevation. Again it was my first experience at this altitude so I found myself breathing deeply and always trying to catch my breath. Many witness altitude sickness which I luckily didn’t get that bad. As I look back on this trip it makes me think about how I approach many aspects of my life, even my blog. Sometimes you really do just need to take a step back and take a deep breath. Things happen so fast and sometimes even catch you off guard and stepping back (or sitting down) to catch your breath or regain your focus is a big help.

If you’re a skier, definitely ski these three mountains if you haven’t done so already. Just drink plenty of water as you easily get dehydrated with that elevation. I may even find myself living out there in a year or so, who knows!
