What Are You Doing On Facebook For So Long?

March 10th, 2008 | Online, Personal, Technology

I’ve basically been against Facebook since it’s inception. That and MySpace have never really done it for me. Meaning, I’ve never really felt the need to join a social network like these. Believe me, I’ve done my research and many of my close friends are on it and I’ve seen it absolutely drain their time. It wasn’t for the lack of understanding for sure. Poking friends and sending bumper stickers and so on…for hours! I’m sure all of you Facebook users can imagine how much flack I received simply from not wanting to join. My friends alone would pick my brain and push and push and push just for me to create a page. My argument was always the same…

What is the point of joining? Staying in touch with friends you don’t talk to anymore? Maybe I’m alone on this one but I’m pretty close with my friends. The ones I want and should be staying in touch with, I do…without the help of Facebook. Well, maybe you can call me hypocritical (I kind of do) but my close friend said “just try it and if you don’t like it just forget about it”. Well, I took him up on his offer because he clearly became way to aggressive on this issue. I figured I should really try this out before totally not accepting it and potentially hurting a friend. So here I am:

So it’s been about a week now that I’ve had my own Facebook page. 145 friends, 57 photos, an application or two and a bunch of increased privacy settings later and here I am. So what do I think so far?

I definitely don’t find it as entertaining as everyone said it would. I mean, between including my AIM contact list, my high school, college and current location I’ve “connected” with a number of people. A couple wall posts, some comments on some photos and thats about it. I’ve come to one conclusion, I think that any person that spends over 15 minutes on Facebook at a time is in some way entertaining there voyeuristic tendencies. Yes, I believe we have a little bit of this inside of us all as I’m sure you’re interested where some of those old friends disappeared to but come on! I know some people that are on it for hour on end. What are you looking at? What are you doing?

Is it really just me? The last few days I’ve logged in and had maybe a notification or two that was not really that important and thats about it. I pretty quickly just log off…

Can someone tell me why people spend so much time with this? Is there something I’m completely missing? Is the wall post replacing email for some of you? I feel like for all the ranting and raving of this service I would not be so bored in such a short period of time. I’m not giving up just yet, I see the benefit for many and if it floats your boat, great! I’m just interested to see how you can spend so much time exploring it and what that includes.

we all know Facebook is simply a utility that lets us stalk ex-girlfriends and potentially get us some love from future unsuspecting broads. Not to mention its a great way to let the entire world know how much you drink and party, kinda of a new age self proclaiming narcissism. God I LOVE Facebook.
