Wireless Wednesday: Mobile Boarding Pass On Its Way
March 19th, 2008 | Mobile, News, TechnologyI was just traveling yesterday for a business pitch and as I was checking in for my flight, they handed me my boarding pass. Is it me or are these passes way too big for the purpose they serve? My boss and I were commenting on how mobile tickets would be so great because how often do you really lose your phone? I know mobile ticketing is being executed but mostly on a small scale as I have executed mobile ticketing campaigns with my previous employer. Well, I think we can expect to see them soon!
I read this morning that Continental Airlines has been testing mobile boarding passes on a small market by market scale.
Continental’s favoured system is a 2D barcode, which is scanned from the passengers’ mobiles and apparently harder to fake than other tokens.

The 2D data matrix is preferred as the existing scanners used can scan this type of code. In most cases it’s just a software install as learned in my previous experience. I am so happy to hear that this is coming to market. If the test goes successfully, which I don’t know why it wouldn’t…I believe we’ll start to see this rolled out to many cities. It seems so logical…save money, paper and time.
Would you use a mobile boarding pass?
